Chronicles of the Black Company - Glen Cook Epic, gritty combination of swords and sorcery, military and noir fiction. This series is one of my all time favorite fantasy series.

I found Cook's writing style to be sparse and to the point, it made me want to keep reading. I enjoyed the jaded, cynical nature of the annalist, Croaker. I very much liked the idea of the Taken and the internal politics and infighting between them. I really enjoyed the point of view. The soldiers, the guys who are actually doing the fighting rather than the kings and lords etc. As a former military guy I could see myself having similar conversations over cards between missions (with less magic). Cook really nailed the voice in the first three books and it spoke to me. Good stuff. I suppose not for everyone but it worked for me.
