I wanted to like this book much more. Grossman is a very able writer of prose. Beautifully written in parts, The Magicians moves veeeerrrryyy slowly. It is more of a character study for the majority of the book, and I couldn't stand any of the characters. Despite the title, there is actually fairly little magic in the first three quarters of the book. The last quarter of the book is a bit of a mess but it does finally show some magic in action. Frankly this book could have been about any group of very smart Emo kids and the fantastical elements are unnecessary. This book is worth your time but not by much. 3 stars.
