What an incredibly imaginative book this is. Burroughs wrote in a flowery style that is a bit offputting at first but I got used to it as the book moved along. Burroughs clearly was making this up as he went along. Every difficult situation is gotten out of by some dues ex machina, never even hinted at previously. The book is swimming in imagination but is very undisciplined, he could have used some editing and a rewrite or two, but then I suppose that isn't how things went in the early pulp era. His attitudes toward race and gender are very 19th century. I don't hold that against him, but some might.
This was an interesting book, the execution is somewhat lacking but the ideas are compelling. A good look at SFF history. I will continue to read in this series. Hopefully the plotting will improve. 3.5/5
