Stephen King is one hell of a storyteller, this book is no exception. King has done it again weaving an engrossing tale of time travel. I liked it, I just didn't love it.I wish King would get an editor he trusted and pare down his prose. I know this has been said by many reviewers in the past, however it is so utterly apt, it needs to be added to every single review of every single thing King writes to include his 1040 form which I assume runs at least 500 pages with three unnecessary plot lines.
This is the story of a Jake Epping, Maine English teacher who is let in on the secret of a time warp which enables him to travel to a small town in Maine in 1958. Since King is a baby boomer and therefore obsessed with St John of Massachusetts, he of course has Epping focus ion saving JFK from the assassin's bullet. Hilarity ensues.
This was a fine story that was about 300 or so pages too long. This is especially jarring after reading Thompson, Caine, Stark, Leonard, MacDonald and Woodrell as my last seven or so books. After all that stark, spare prose, King's bloated prose stuck out all the more.
I don't want to give the impression that I disliked the book, I just thought it was a very good book that could have been great with a little editing. Note to authors who plan on becoming wildly successful, you still need a fucking editor.
